The Latin Term used above is accurately translated (Bird with Big, Flesh Ripping Tooth). This is perhaps a bit over exagerated considering the size of the bird. However, anyone that has ever been bitten by a budgerigar would confess that its not a pleasant experience. LOL!!! The Budgie (most commonly called) is the smallest member of the Parrot family, therefore titled the Parakeet. It originates from Australia and stands about 8" tall from head to the tip of the tail. Budgies are very intelligent animals and can be trained to do marvelous things. In my personal humble opinion, I cannot think of a more perfect animal to have as a pet. They can be very loving and affectionate animals, and they can also be very violent and territorial animals too! A bird attitude and personality is a reflection of the environment it lives in. If a bird lives in a large area with few birds, it will more than likely bond with its bird friends and be happy. If there is abundant room it may even accept new birds that are introduced to it. If a bird lives alone, it will more than likely bond with the human it most interacts with, consequently it may reject and attack another bird. Birds require key elements to stay happy. Light is a major necessity, Cage Room is also important. A balanced diet (seed or pellet - I recommend pellet) and plenty of water. They need proper perches to rest on, toys to play with, and most importantly, ATTENTION!!! A bird without a mate or without human attention will become lonely and more prone to depression. As I have said before I am using this site as a means to teach new bird owners or people interested in someday owning a bird on how to take good care of them. The american budgie is the original breed, unlike its cousin the English Budgie, which is a man made species of Budgerigar bred for size. Here are some pics of my birds which will display various styles of Budgies.
